Frequently Asked Questions

You purchase the van. You can buy it from a dealer near your home and bring it to us, or buy it from a dealer in the Pittsburgh area. There is no advantage to using a dealer near our shop, other than proximity. We have no agreements or arrangements with any dealers. Either way, you supply the van for your build.

We require a $1,000* deposit to reserve a place on our build schedule and to begin the design. The deposit is applied to the final cost of your conversion.

We then work with you to design the van around what you need and want. Together we list the features you would like, such as a toilet, a shower, or both. As the design takes shape, we send 3D CAD drawings of the proposed layout. You can request changes and ask questions along the way. Once the layout is final, we provide a detailed written estimate for your approval. After you review and approve it, we draft a contract that explains how and when payments are made. The schedule usually includes:

  • 50% of the total cost, due two weeks before the build starts, so we can order materials and begin your build.
  • 40% of the total cost, due when the van is halfway complete.
  • The remaining balance, due before we schedule your pickup appointment.

We source the components, place the orders, and track the shipments and deliveries.

Please have your van at our shop one week before the build starts. Build time can vary with the availability of parts and materials, but a custom conversion typically takes 10 to 16 weeks. We stay in touch throughout the build and send plenty of photos and updates. We know you are looking forward to hearing how the work is going.

*Once we have provided drawings and a build estimate, only $500 of your deposit is refundable if you decide not to move forward. We will make every reasonable effort to design your van to your specifications.

It depends on how many modifications you want and how complex they are. Once the design is final, the build usually takes 10 to 16 weeks.

It depends on the van you start with and the features you want in the finished van. During the design, we can go over specifications and prices for the main components so you can choose what fits your needs and budget. Simple builds have been completed for about $40,000, and more luxurious builds can go over $85,000.

For the initial $1,000 deposit, we accept a personal check or a bank-to-bank wire transfer.

Please make later payments the same way.

We do not offer financing. Please contact your local bank or credit union to ask about financing.

We are a full-service builder, so we can source and install each component in your build. We have worked with many suppliers and can recommend options based on what you want and need. If you already have components you would like us to use, tell us during the design discussion and we will do our best to include them.

Overlander Vans offers a one-year warranty on our labor. Components purchased for the build are covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.

We have owned and converted many ProMasters, and we want to share what we have learned about this van for your travels. That does not mean we work only on Ram ProMaster vans. We also design and build Mercedes Sprinters and Ford Transits. You can see our builds on Instagram @overlandervans.
